Posted by admin in eating disorders | November 30th, 2008

Dr. John Breeding, Ph. Psychologist discusses eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, and over-eating. Dr. Breeding discusses how problems w/ eating are the norm in American Society. He makes mention of movies like Super Size Me, The Future of Food and Fast Food Nation as examples of just how messed up the American diet is.

He also talks about women and body image and how socially women are expected to look like skinny fashion models in order for them to feel sexy or attractive.

  4. PrincessAlejandra Says:

just to give you an …
just to give you an idea there was a campaign agaisnt anorexia and bulimia made by a cosmetic company using the writer of “abzurdah” (cielo latini, a young girl who used to suffer from ED) as the image for this.

  5. PrincessAlejandra Says:

    you shouldnt know …
you shouldnt know this.. but (japan is the first one) Argentina follow by Peru are the countries with more anorexic people (third world) you would be very surprised about how big are the anas and mias communities around “the third world” just google “ana mia princesas” and you would find how big is that…

  6. PrincessAlejandra Says:

    actually there are …
actually there are more eating disorders on the third world… because its a place where beauty is success… and FAT its just unacceptable… you wont see obese girls… they are not socialy accepted… they wont go to clubs or find good jobs… just like that… they would be totally exclude.. there is not like us that they keep with their life as fat girls…

    I enjoyed this - …
I enjoyed this - very interesting the effects of our western lives. Drugs, addictions (overshopping, over/under-eating), excesses of every kind.
The western world is very sick and likes to be down on, and “for”, the third-world. We have a lot to learn about going back to the simple things and values which are so important to human nature - we are programmed like that.
    This lecture emphasizes this.

  11. poisonedxveins Says:

    It seems as though …
It seems as though you’re saying that people who happen to have a mental illness don’t have a voice of their own?

Maybe you should look up some youtube videos of people who actually have an eating disorder… you’d learn a whole lot more about living with an eating disorder from them.

  12. poisonedxveins Says:

    Exactly. …
Exactly. Correlation does not mean causation.
And eating disorders ARE found in countries other than America, including both westernised and non-westernised countries.
Eating disorders are also not just about being thin. In fact, that’s something that is often focussed upon when really there is so much more to eating disorders and why they develop than physical appearance! It’s not all about the media, but more about family structure, genetics and personality type.

  13. papershreds Says:

    ok that was …
ok that was supposed to a reply to plutoplatters below…

  14. papershreds Says:

    maybe there are no …
maybe there are no eating disorders in 3rd world countries because there is no food so any food they get, they eat. so what you’re saying is that eating disorders stem from people in wealthy countries having the choice to not eat? this may be true but it doesn’t get to the source of the problem. for these illnesses it’s food, if it’s not food- it’ll be something else. making observations like this doesn’t do anything- it’s pretty much irrelevant because it won’t change anything i’m afraid!

  15. soccom8341576 Says:

    Well, females do …
Well, females do have control over their bodies. Feminists can make females more aware of this and make smarter choices. That would be the root of the problem.
Complaining about culture and men doesn’t really help, as if it would even achieve much.

I suppose many these days seem to lack the self-control necessary to prevent oneself from engaging in activities that may cause them harm.

  16. soccom8341576 Says:

    It could be culture …
It could be culture and corporatism and the way kids are brought up to love sugary foods. They are related to wealth, even though it isn’t strictly the fact that we have more money in our pockets!

This doesn’t really happen in every MEDC. Japan doesn’t really have much of these “disorders”.

  17. calikaren71 Says:

    do yall notice when …
do yall notice when he says “eating disorders” he uses the word “So-called” right before it?

  18. gohiontach3 Says:

    more than women …
more than women have this disorder!!!!

  19. plutoplatters Says:

    ( i was meaning to …
( i was meaning to convey ” wealth” is a HUGE part of it,other than total personal choice. )

  20. plutoplatters Says:

    we almost NEVER …
we almost NEVER come to a conclusion in regards to proving things in general. Prime example: unwealthy countries dont have the disorders. Wealthy rich ones do.
Nothing needs proving here,it’s obvious. We so often excuse the completely obvious, saying,”you cant prove that” .. wow

  21. ashleydayr Says:

    I agree with the …
I agree with the addiction model. Eating disorders are often comorbid with SUDs (Substance Use Disorders). Often an individual may have an addictive personality and develop one, the other, or both. Or recovering from an addiction can cause the individual to cross-addict and find another addiction.

  22. ashleydayr Says:

    It’s not …
It’s not necessarily that our wealth has caused eating disorders. Correlation doesn’t prove causation. True, we have more wealth than other countries and true, we have a higher percentage of the population suffering from eating disorders. The coexistance of these two doesn’t point to eating disorders being CAUSED by the wealth. They may merely coexist. Our society happens to also be one that values a thin body more than other societies. There could be multiple causes.
