Why do eating disorders affect more girls than guys?

Posted by admin in eating disorders | May 24th, 2011

It has been historically known that eating disorders only affected women. And that eating disorders are also characterized by pathological fear of weight gain, starvation, purging, and laxative abuse. But why? Shouldn’t they affect both sexes? In my opinion, I think it affects both sexes.

If they affect more girls than guys, so how come we see more guys than girls at the gym? Since eating disorders also involve body obssession.

Saying that eating disorders only ever affected is wrong, youd actually be suprised how many guys are concious of their bodies and how much they weigh, im 17 and only recently i began to get help from my psychologist because my obsession with my body weight (particuarly my belly) and my eating just began to control my life to the point where i would hate myself after eating anything and go to sleep hungry or crying, seeing my psychologist and talking about my situation was one of the best things i have ever done. Whilst i may not be totally ‘cured’ i am certainly alot happier than i was a month. On your issue, i personally think that women being the only weight concious sex is a common stereotype. People these days are more body concious than ever primarily due to the media repeatedly showing society of the image of a ‘typical guy or girl’, which sends everyone a negative view on themselves. Guys and girls may have many differences, but just remember that we are all human and we have many similarities that few people want to realise.
